A

Athlete's Foot - A fungal infection of the skin. Often ignored. Should always be treated as can be associated with bacterial skin infections.

Ankle Sprain - Twisting of the ankle joint causing pain, inflammation and debility. Appropriate early treatment reduces the risk of long term instability. Can be treated with immobilisation, and splints together with exercises.

B

Bunions (Hallux Valgus) - A soft tissue deformity of the first toe joint. Often associated with the bony deformity Hallux Valgus. Treatment in extreme cases can include surgery.

C

Chiropody - The historical name for podiatrists. Unfortunately it was not a closed profession so there were many different levels of training from a six week in-shop training, to a 3 year full time course.

Corns / Callouses - A thick and painful overgrowth of skin associated with abnormal pressure in that area. Removal leads to short term relief of pain but will return unless the underlying cause is addressed.

D

Diabetes - Foot care is particularly important in management of this condition.

Durlacher - English chiropodist to Queen Victoria wrote one of the first comprehensive textbooks for the profession in 1850.

E

Emollients - Essential part of foot care, used to re-hydrate the skin.

F

Foot Pain - Many different causes. Essential that you choose a trained podiatrist to diagnose the root of the problem.

G

Gryphotic nails - Very thick and misshapen nail caused by trauma. In most cases painlessly treated.

Gait analysis - The study of human movement. State of the art video capture system linked to powerful computerised software. It can be integrated with pressure plate analysis.

H

Hallux Rigidus - A degenerative condition of the first toe joint leading to stiffness, deformity and pain. Treatment may involve podiatry and self help, orthoses, injections, or surgery depending on severity.

Hallux Valgus - A degenerative condition of the first toe joint where the big toe moves toward the second. Treatment may involve podiatry and self help, orthoses or surgery.

I

In-growing toenail - A painful condition where the nail pierces the skin. This may lead to subsequent infection so urgent treatment should be sought.

Joints - Each human foot and ankle has 33 joints, 26 bones, 20 muscles and 106 ligaments.

K

Keratin - The tough protein that gives our skin its resilience. Diligent foot care will keep this working for you.

Mulder's Click - A diagnostic sign for Morton’s Neuroma.

Neuroma - Often called Morton’s Neuroma. Where a nerve becomes inflamed and enlarged in the foot. Often leads to intense pain with activity. Treatment – podiatric advice, orthoses, injections or surgery.

Orthosis - An orthopaedic appliance or apparatus used to support, align, prevent, or correct deformities.

Onycho - Greek meaning nail or claw.

P

Plantar Fasciitis - An inflammation of the plantar fascia of the foot. A common condition causing pain and debility (usually after a period of rest). Treatment involves podiatric advice, orthoses, and injections.

Podiatry - The branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases of the human foot.

Pressure Plate Analysis - Knee pain can often be the result of poor foot mechanics causing abnormal tracking of the patella. Gait analysis is used to diagnose and treat the problem.

Rheumatoid Arthritis - Commonly affects the feet causing pain and deformity. Comprehensive foot care can often alleviate the pain.

Sever's Disease - A painful heel associated with growth typically occurring in fit children between the ages of 9 and 12. Ideally treatment can allow pain free activity until the condition resolves itself.

Tailor's Bunion - A similar condition to Hallux Valgus, but affecting the smallest metatarsal. Treatment may involve podiatry and self help, orthoses or surgery.

U

Ungual Haematoma - Blood under the nail has many different causes. Once diagnosed the cause and symptoms can be treated to cure the problem.

Worry - Foot problems cause a lot of worry and embarrassment. Treated quickly and effectively they can be sorted to allow painless freedom of movement.

X

X-ray - Often a necessary part of diagnosis, used in conjunction with other investigations.

Y

You - You and your foot health is important. Healthy feet mean a healthy and happy you.

Z

Zadek - Zadek nail incision is a type of nail surgery to correct the most difficult in-grown nail problems.
