Corns and Callouses
Patients often attending the clinic present with corns and callouses on the feet. These lesions are caused through an increase in loading of localised structures. They often accompany underlying pathology such as hallux valgus (bunions) or hammer toe deformity.
Simple care of these can be extremely effective with clinical treatment of the lesion and simple supports, although occasionally it is necessary to correct the underlying deformity.
When you attend clinic the causes of these lesions will be fully discussed with you and simple self help measures will often result in a marked improvement in symptoms.
Sometimes the lesions are caused by other factors such as viral infection or nerve and blood vessel enlargement. These tend to be extremely resistant to simple care and often require excision, with the tissue being sent for laboratory examination, or electro surgery to destroy the painful nerve endings.
