Surgical Patient Experiences

Ingrid Stevens – Salisbury
I was referred to Lyndon Jones by my GP because I had been suffering from painful hammer toes and corns for over a year. The pain was now affecting my walking and I was finding that I couldn’t even stand for any period of time either.

Mr Jones suggested that a minor operation on my toes was probably the best option and he explained the procedure very clearly to me. I was free to ask all the questions I wanted and he put my mind at rest with simple to understand explanations.

I was just so relieved to be having something done to get rid of my pain that I did not worry at all about having surgery under local anaesthetic. As it happens the whole surgical experience was calm and relaxed and I did not feel any pain at all.

My foot wasn’t even painful afterwards and a few weeks later I was wearing my shoes and back to my normal activities.

My surgery was a huge success. I feel so much more comfortable now.

Annabel Abbott – Midhurst
Following five years of pain which was stopping me from completing my normal activities, including my much loved golf, I came to see Lyndon Jones on the recommendation of an insole manufacturer.

I had lots of problems with bunions and crossed toes and Mr Jones was very polite and listened carefully while I explained my concerns.

I was expecting to undergo surgery and was not at all worried when Mr Jones told me that it would all be done under local anaesthetic. He explained the procedures that he would use in plain English and was happy to answer my questions. I was pretty apprehensive prior to the surgery, but once it was under way, although it felt strange, I did not feel any pain at all.

It was painful afterwards for about ten days. However, I took the recommended analgesics and rested as advised and it was not really too much of a problem to sit with my feet up. You have to expect some discomfort after surgery. After about three weeks I could wear my normal shoes again and I was back to good activity.

I consider my surgery was totally successful and my feet now look stunning!

I went to my GP initially with a crushing pain in my toes which occurred during and after sports. I had been suffering this pain for about twelve months and it was seriously affecting my activities.

My GP referred me on to Mr Jones who was very professional and explained the reason I was getting the pain and the treatment available. He diagnosed me with a neuroma, which is a fibrous thickening from the nerve to the long bones in my foot. Mr Jones was very understanding to my concerns and answered all my questions in simple non medical language.

I was not worried by having surgery under local anaesthetic. If it meant I could be pain free afterwards I was happy to give it a go. There was a little discomfort during surgery, but no pain at all. I experienced some pain afterwards though, and I expected that, but after two weeks I could wear my shoes and at about four weeks after surgery I was back to light activity.

The whole experience was absolutely fine for me. I did not experience any problems at all. My foot is now back to normal and I am enjoying my sport again.

Anne Maratty - Salisbury
I had been suffering from pain and discomfort, mainly on the balls of my feet for a number of years. About six years ago I underwent foot surgery by an orthopaedic surgeon, but it was unsuccessful and I saw a local podiatrist who recommended I went to see Mr Jones; which I did in January 2009.

I found him to be an excellent listener, professional, understanding and knowledgeable. He explained my problem thoroughly and answered all my questions. I was apprehensive initially when Mr Jones suggested I would be able to have surgical correction under local anaesthetic, but I knew of other people who had had similar surgery performed by Mr Jones and I was happy to go ahead.

I did not feel any pain during surgery, just a sensation of movement. There was some pain afterwards for about 48 hours but gradually it lessened. I had my sutures removed at ten days and went straight into trainers afterwards. I was back to work and driving after four weeks.

I am extremely pleased with the results. Walking is more comfortable despite the recent surgery. I am so grateful to Mr Jones and his team. I wish I had gone to him initially for the foot surgery six years ago. He is renowned as the best podiatric surgeon in the South.
