Acupuncture

The most common use of acupuncture is pain relief, where it has been demonstrated to be a safe and effective aid in the treatment of a variety of painful conditions.

Acupuncture includes a number of techniques, which involve inserting very fine, single-use sterile needles into the body at specified points. The needles are then gently manipulated to stimulate the area, causing the release of natural painkillers (e.g. endorphins), which help relieve the discomfort associated with painful disorders.

  • Acupuncture is safe and virtually painless
  • Acupuncture works naturally with little or no side effects
  • Acupuncture stimulates the body to help itself
  • Acupuncture has fewer side effects than many drug treatments

After thorough history taking, assessment and diagnosis of the problem, acupuncture points are selected specific to each patient’s complaint. These points are either located on conceptual pathways or meridians at acupoints, or else are found at trigger points. The points may be found near to the problem or alternatively suitable sites may be at the other end of, or opposite side of, the body.

The number of treatments varies from person to person

  • For complex or long standing conditions, one treatment a week for several weeks may be recommended
  • For acute problems, usually fewer visits are required
  • For health maintenance, four sessions a year may be all that is necessary

Most people will need between 3 to 8 treatments, and some need to return for regular "top up" treatments every few months. Each session lasts for approximately 20-30 minutes.

Points to note if considering acupuncture

  • Most patients experience no problems at all following treatment
  • Some patients may feel faint following treatment
  • Some patients can experience bruising following treatment
  • Some patients feel very tired following treatment
  • Temporary aggravation of the symptoms can occur prior to improvement
  • Several treatments may be required before improvement is seen

The practice of acupuncture dates back to at least the 2nd century B.C. in China and is often incorporated with traditional Chinese medicine. Different variations of acupuncture are practiced and taught throughout the world.
